Paperback vs Ebook vs Hardcover: A Pricing Strategy That Works

Pricing is the single highest-leverage marketing decision you make after publishing. Get the three-format ladder right and average order value, conversion, and royalty per sale all go up at once.

The format ladder

The pattern that works in most non-fiction categories: ebook at $4.99–$6.99, paperback at $12.99–$16.99, hardcover at $24.99–$29.99. Fiction runs lower across the board: ebook at $2.99–$4.99, paperback at $9.99–$14.99, hardcover at $19.99–$24.99.

Why offer all three

The hardcover is rarely your best seller, but its existence raises the perceived value of the paperback and ebook. A $16.99 paperback looks expensive on its own; next to a $29.99 hardcover it looks like the smart choice. This is anchor pricing, and Amazon's listing layout is built for it.

When to use $0.99 promos

Sparingly and only on book one of a series, or to revive a backlist title. A permanent $0.99 ebook trains your audience to wait for sales and destroys per-title royalty. A 5-day promo timed with email and ads can earn back a month of normal sales.

Common mistakes

Matching your ebook price to your paperback price (no buyer will choose ebook). Pricing your paperback below KDP's printing cost plus a reasonable margin. Forgetting to update prices when you re-launch.

What to do this week

Audit your top five titles. For each, write down the three format prices, the per-sale royalty, and the BSR. Adjust any format that is more than 20% off the category median.
